Zombie Flesh Eaters by wild child director of Italian Horror, Lucio Fulci, who was as perfectionist and as avant-garde and psychedelic as he could ever be, genius film maker, who insisted that a gore scene be as gory, realistic and shocking as he could afford, so as that you as the viewer would be able to feel you had actually witnessed the hideous nightmare act portrayed in front of your very eyes and then by doing so, you could feel the horror and not just see it.

Usually these were brought lovingly to life for Lucio by special effects guru Giannetto De Rossi and many other wizards of gore special effects, all before computer generated stuff took over.

It wasn't just about the gore either, O no! Lucio was a directorial high-commander in his heyday, he could employ some of the most beautiful, sophisticated and sexy actresses in the film business, who were always more than happy to "peel-off" for a scene. Never pornographic might I add, that would be off-putting, no, more like erotic and an appreciation of the naked female form, Lucio was an artist not a smut-peddler, not that there's anything wrong with that but, it was never pure sex or nudity just for the sake of it, controversial yes, many times but definetly not porn, even James Bond would have got jealous.

Couple that with some of the most extraordinary cinematography from some of the most leading and creative exponents working in the art at the time. Then also the fact that political forces + a major economic recession in Italy did no favours for Lucio's later film projects and this artistic upheaval in general limited the amount of new horror feature film releases, it was a tough time to be a film-maker in Italy, it never really recovered from it or did we here in the UK Film scene, to this day they are still recalled as "Dark Times", although saying that new green film-making shoots do and did appear but it was the end of the great "home-made" Italian and European epics we new in the 50's, 60's and 70's, such an awful shame.

Having had the wondrous good fortune to meet Lucio and shake his hand and then thank him "for all the zombies" back in 1994 at EuroFest in London at The Everyman and from someone who has completely enjoyed all of his films during my student daze along with my girlfriend who was as mad for Italian Horror as I was and still is, this is the moment we have all been waiting for, it's back and has never looked better, with a multitude of special features and extras plus a very special intro from Ian McCulloch himself just means you should get online, get your credit card out and order before they all sell out...
