Django: Unchained is the continuation by Quentin Tarantino, film director, of possibly one of the most popular "cult" Italian produced western films ever made.

Say "Spaghetti Western" and you automatically think of Italian film director Sergio Leone; "A Fist Full Of Dollars", "For A Few Dollars More", "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" and the incredible "Once Upon A Time In The West", but running along side these giants of cinema, was a little film which began production in 1965 by another Italian director, Sergio Corbucci, that film was "Django".

Sergio Corbucci's, "Django", which starred Franco Nero as the mysterious stranger, dressed in black, dragging behind him a wooden coffin, broke the mold for a so-called "Cowboy Film", with for that time, extreme violence and with a multi numbered death count. A stylish, fantastic to look at film, where the stranger, like a rat-catcher wipes out large gang or posse of sadistic cowboy's single handed.

Looking back at "Django" now nearly fifty years later, it's tame for it's 1960's violent ear chopping scene and there are no "bloody" slow-motion bullet hit squibs going off either, but for the time, it was not liked by the censors at all, in fact it was banned from release in Sweden, and refused an X certificate in the UK till 1993 and even given an 18 certificate in it's home country, Italy, that's just ridiculous for me to think, I thought that when I found an Inter-Ocean  beta original tape in a "junk shop" in 1992, I am even more dumbfounded to think that now, especially when the other gore westerns like "Soldier Blue" and "A Man Called Horse" were going around and shocking everyone with their graphic violence four years later in 1970, films which were breaking the box offices here and right across Europe.

Since it's release in 1966, there have been many films accredited with the Title of "Django", you know, "Django: Does this" and "Django does that" and so on, but Corbucci would never return, and Nero would only make the one "official" sequel in 1987, after "hating all the mud the first time", the very poor in comparison "Django Strikes Again".

For me Corbucci's original, is the "Enter the Dragon" of the spaghetti western genre, much imitated, never equalled, a film amongst films, the one everyone draws the line by.

Easily as good as the "Man with No Name" films, easy, for it's eyebrow acting, tension building scenes with no dialogue and the brooding "30 yard stares", flying around before any bullets, it is just purely and simply one of the greatest "western" films ever made. Copyright M.A. Le-Leivre.

Set in the South two years before the Civil War, Django: Unchained stars Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive.

Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.

Django and Schultz’s search ultimately leads them to Calvin Candie (Academy Award nominee Leonardo DiCaprio), the proprietor of “Candyland,” an infamous plantation where slaves are groomed by trainer Ace Woody (Kurt Russell) to battle each other for sport. Exploring the compound under false pretenses, Django and Schultz arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson), Candie’s trusted house slave. Their moves are marked, and a treacherous organization closes in on them. If Django and Schultz are to escape with Broomhilda, they must choose between independence and solidarity, between sacrifice and survival…

Written and directed by Academy Award winner Quentin Tarantino, Django: Unchained is produced by Stacey Sher, Reginald Hudlin and Pilar Savone. The executive producers are Harvey and Bob Weinstein, Michael Shamberg, Shannon McIntosh, and James Skotchdopole. DJANGO UNCHAINED will be released in the U.S. on December 25, 2012, and internationally by Sony Pictures.
