Big Ass Spider. UK DVD review. Trailers/Clip/Poster/Details. on UK Blu-ray/DVD 23rd December 2013.

Big Ass Spider. Official UK DVD Review 2013.
Really very enjoyable, above-par creature feature B-Movie, starring a well realized and lovingly animated Big Ass Spider. Created by the military for weapons use, it accidentally has it’s DNA mixed with a virus from Mars dust in the Lab by mistake, it then escapes out into Los Angeles where it starts to grow to an enormous size.

An intuitive cast play it all the way for laughs and groans, nodding their heads politely to other cult classics of B-Movie Arachnid mayhem along the way. You’ll have fun spotting all the references to “Tarantula”, “Them”, “Arachnophobia”, 8 Legged Freaks”, “Starship Troopers” and even the “face eating spiders” from “The Beyond”.

The good thing about Mike Mendez’s direction is that he is aware of the limitations of such films, so he introduces and builds up the cast into 3-dimensional, rounded characters toward the beginning, so leaving nearly the second half of the movie to “Big Ass Spider” herself.

It is not just a “We have a CGI Spider and we’re going to use it” mess of a film, like some out there, it is a genuinely funny, well made and acted, not just “lashed-together, new creature feature and I think it deserves a late-nite watch. I was cheering for the Big Ass Spider all the way, as I always side with the creature in these movies, Godzilla, King Kong, Giant Alligators in the sewer are all good friends of mine and I always get miffed when they take a ballistic missile or two.
Big Ass Spider. Official Clip.
Big Ass Spider has some lovely touches to her animation and soon she has a character and personality all of her own, the attack in the park amongst all the volleyball players and picnicker’s is great fun, thing’s get a tiny bit gory, but thankfully the film is not a gore-driven exercise, but the special effects are plentiful up against the characters performances. Hell, even Lloyd Kaufman from “Troma Films” makes an appearance in a cameo as a “jogger”.

Essentially it’s a buddy movie about a Pest Exterminator Alex Mathis (Greg Grunberg) who teams up with Security Guard, Jose Ramos (Lombardo Boyer) to take down the Big Ass Spider, after a military exercise led by Major Braxton Tanner (Ray Wise) and Lieutenant Karly Brant (Clare Kramer) goes wrong as Big Ass Spider goes “Stage Five” and achieves the ability to reproduce.
